We recently added another short-term rental to our portfolio. It just so happens to be closer to the grandbaby and in a super cute town that reminds me of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. It’s a super cute town that’s also near a major highway, a Marine base, a commuter train station, and a college. What is interesting about adding a second STR to the Airbnb, VRBO and Expedia platforms is that we don’t have to go through the business of proving ourselves as hosts again. Rather, our status from the platforms carries over, making it much easier to start renting a new property.
Starting a new rental in a different state is definitely challenging since we aren’t local to pop over and meet guests or handle issues they way we do currently. There have also been some differences in how the city collects taxes for rentals and how billing for utilities is handled. We also don’t have our network our vendors handy. Fortunately, we have hired a family member who is willing to act as our property manager.
Let us know if you ever have reason to be in Fredericksburg, Virginia. We’d love to host you.
